Remaining positive in a negative environment is a difficult task, especially if you’re dealing with a crisis like the ongoing pandemic. And, maybe it isn’t just your workplace – perhaps it’s at home or even social events. Regardless of where the negativity is taking place, it’s essential to arm yourself with the resources to rise above it and stay positive in a negative environment.
Once you’ve made the decision that you’re not going to fall prey to the behavior taking place around you, let others know. When you begin to sense the adverse reaction, excuse yourself from the situation. It’s okay to say, “I don’t want to take part in this.” It’s especially important to remove yourself from cases that involve others talking negatively about other people; coworkers, family members, or leaders. When you feel like you’ve reached your edge of frustration and begin to sense your own negativity, stop immediately.
Take a break. Sneak away to the bathroom, office, or any other private area and collaborate with your thoughts. Take a moment to meditate and remind yourself of the benefits of staying positive. It could be anything! Recite that word or phrase to yourself when you find yourself falling into that negative state of mind. Try a breathing exercise: How you breathe can affect your mind, body, and soul. It has proven effects to help with stress management and can help a great deal in many situations.
Smiles are infectious and are a great way to deflect negativity. There are also studies to suggest that smiling, even when we don’t feel like it, can significantly influence positive behavior – and not only within us but others too. So, keep a smile planted on your face! Stop victimizing yourself: Try to stop with the “Why me,” and the woe-is-me-mentality. Remind yourself how strong you are.
Build yourself up and fill your mind with positive thoughts. Bad things happen, even to good people, but it’s how we handle them that matter. Being negative is easy; It’s easy to fall into conversations with others and talk about what and who we dislike. Being a positive person takes work, patience, and dedication. But, soon enough, you’ll be the positive role model the world needs. You’ll thank yourself for it!
